Hi there,
Can anyone tell me a good way to keep my bad bad kitty from scratching the furniture. He will look at me, stretch up on the couch, and start scratching. He knows it is wrong, and makes me angry, but does it anyway. Help please.

Re: Need advice - scratching
Fri, March 18, 2005 - 11:31 PMDoes he have a scrathing post? You can make one with some nice plywood squares, some PVC pipe and SISAL rope from the hardware store. it should be TALL so your bad kitty can stretch out.... I know that my old cathousemate Brill would scratch the furniture and he would get squirted with a water gun. He did not like that! I also know people have had lucky with StickyPaws and Feliway. I have never had experience with either one. Those most important thing is not to yell (as in scream, firm voices are ok) or smack him, that will just make him more rotten. But since you love him enough to come on here and ask, I know you are a good cat mommy.

Re: Need advice - scratching
Sun, March 20, 2005 - 8:49 AMseems like kitty either needs a good alternative place to scratch or maybe it's a message of soemsort. have you tried providing kitty with lots of altrnative catnip laced places to scratch? we have the cardboard catnip scratchy things and the twine things. yelling is confusing when it's about something we have to do - like shedding our nails. -

Re: Need advice - scratching
Sun, March 20, 2005 - 3:40 PMwe love cardboard, and bigger's better, if you can't get your cat interested a new scratchy toy or post, you may want to take it to a kitty friends house and let them stink it up good like other cats, (be sure they are healthy kitties, no fleas, had shots, etc.) then maybe at least your kitty will check it out. Show your kitty by scratching on it yourself, he'll look at ya like your a fool, and you are, but eventually, it does sink in that there are no bad consequences for these new scratchings.. especially if even you're doing it...
Gotta say squirt bottle, though it offends our kitty sensiblity to agree, a deterent of unequaled dislikability.

Wed, March 23, 2005 - 12:29 PMHello! Sometimes squirt bottle training is effective, but only if they
aren't aware that YOU are doing the squirting. I have found that large pieces of tree bark and driftwood especially enticing to cats.
They seem to prefer rough surfaces. I would place what you want them to scratch on in front of what they have been scratching on - hopefully they'll transfer their attention. Cats also HATE the smell of citrus - it can be an effective deterrent. Good luck! -

Sun, March 27, 2005 - 6:57 AMyeah whats up with that? the girl peels an orange after she eats every night and buddy runs away. is she afraid of the orange? hahahaha -

Re: Need advice - scratching
Mon, March 28, 2005 - 12:57 PMOr perhaps it's some sort of feline faux pas - whenever I offer oranges or lemons to cats for sniffing, they look extremely offended and run off. Is citrus not worthy of kitty contemplation??
(Run - she's got an orange!!) -
